Lee Root was working on this plane when I first came out to the airport for an EAA 650 get together. These pictures found their way to the web site when Al Vlasmann, former president, was doing some renovation and found a box of Chapter items. Thanks Lee for your support of EAA 650 and sharing your love of airplanes.

Construction of the International Space Station Look at what happened from 1998 until 2008. In just ten years it has grown and grown. Watch the pieces come together as they are sent up from Earth. This is the International Space Station (ISS) Assembly diagram, piece by piece. I had no idea the Space Station had grown to this size. This is really cool..... What a piece of engineering!! This news caught me by surprise. Pilots cannot exercise the privileges of their PAPER pilot certificates after March 31, 2010. Certificates issued under 14 CFR Part 63 and 65 will expire March 31, 2013. FAR 61.19(h) reads: Duration of pilot certificates . Except for a temporary certificate issued under §61.17 or a student pilot certificate issued under paragraph (b) of this section, the holder of a paper pilot certificate issued under this part may not exercise the privileges of that certificate after March 31, 2010. http://www.faa.gov/licenses_ certificates/airmen_ certification/expiring_paper_ certificates/ http://www.jessevaughn.com/ journal/2009/6/22/faa- mandates-plastic-pilot- certificates-by-2010.html There is normally a $2 charge but there is no charge if you have the FAA remove your SSN from the certificate. Regards, Mike

Doctor Hans Von Ohain was a German airplane designer who invented an operational jet engine. Hans Von Ohain obtained his doctorate in Physics at the University of Göttingen in Germany and then became the junior assistant to Hugo Von Pohl, director of the Physical Institute at the University. German aircraft builder, Ernst Heinkel asked the university for assistance in new airplane propulsion designs and Pohl recommended his star pupil. Hans Von Ohain, was investigating a new type of aircraft engine that did not require a propeller. Only twenty-two years old when he first conceived the idea of a continuous cycle combustion engine in 1933, Hans Von Ohain patented a jet propulsion engine design similar in concept to that of Sir Frank Whittle but different in internal arrangement in 1934. Hans Von Ohain joined Ernst Heinkel in 1936 and continued with the development of his concepts of jet propulsion. A successful bench test of one of his engines was accomplished in September 1937. A small ...

Here is a link some might find interesting. It has all the old Sky King programs. We didn't have television when I was a kid, so I never saw them. They are lame beyond belief: implausible plots, ham acting, etc. A historical curiousity. http://www.americanflyers.net/entertainment/skyking.asp -- EAA 650 blog http://eaa650.blogspot.com/ EAA 650 web page www.eaa650.org

This is pretty cool footage of a U2 climbing out to 70,000 ft AGL and landing. (Sorry if you already know this) but the British guy is talking about things boiling - at those altitudes and with your body temp of 98.6F, your blood would boil if you lost even a little cabin pressure. As you can see this Kelly Johnson machine was nothing but a glider with a BIG engine (and very good cameras) - there has always been a story circulating among my aerospace friends that a U2 had an engine quit over Alaska (not sure where) and he was able to glide back to Sacramento, CA. Do I believe it? Maybe.... Pretty heavy glider, but then so is the Space Shuttle. PS: Can you believe this company went on to make the SR-71? This video is a once in a lifetime experience of a British civilian getting a flight at over 70,000 ft. in a U-2 spy plane. Please note at the take-off the assist wheels on the outer edges of the wings which drop off upon take-off. The wings are so long that they n...

Subject: Unintended Loop at Takeoff...WOW!! Read this first then watch! The new F-35 is a vertical takeoff supersonic jet for the Navy and the Marines. I would say there's nothing about this incident the pilot enjoys other than the end result. If he could have ejected at 100' upside down and lived, he would have. Looks like the afterburner kicks in while still vectored for vertical takeoff. DUH! Lockheed would call this a "software malfunction" and needs to do a little more "regressive testing". Good demo of power-to-weight ratio of this aircraft! And some unbelievable stability control. If he didn't come out of the loop wings-level, it probably would have been bad news, maybe taking some of the carrier with him! Flying through your own exhaust can lead to equipment malfunctions, too, but fortunately he avoided that. This is the most unbelievable piece of flying you will ever see in your life. This is how a supremely well-trained US Navy p...
