Re: 70,000 ft. in a U-2 spy plane

This is pretty cool footage of a U2 climbing out to 70,000 ft AGL and landing.  

(Sorry if you already know this) but the British guy is talking about things boiling - at those altitudes and with your body temp of 98.6F, your blood would boil if you lost even a little cabin pressure. 

As you can see this Kelly Johnson machine was nothing but a glider with a BIG engine (and very good cameras) - there has always been a story circulating among my aerospace friends that a U2 had an engine quit over Alaska (not sure where) and he was able to glide back to Sacramento, CA.   Do I believe it?  Maybe....  Pretty heavy glider, but then so is the Space Shuttle.

PS:  Can you believe this company went on to make the SR-71?

This video is a once in a lifetime experience of a British civilian getting a
flight at over 70,000 ft. in a U-2 spy plane.  Please note at the take-off
the assist wheels on the outer edges of the wings which drop off upon
take-off.  The wings are so long that they need temporary support until
lift-off.  What is not shown is at the landing the plane actually slows to
a small enough speed that two guys are actually able to grab the wing tips
and put those assist wheels back on.

The civilian getting the ride is the host of the car show on BBC shown
through Europe .  The views are spectacular as the U-2 flies at altitudes
which constitute "SPACE."

We got together in the Old Terminal building and had some biscuits and gravy provided by Teey and Jack Eads. John Hayes told us about upcoming events, and welcomed some newcomers.
Then our guest speaker Willis Zeise spoke about a peculiar set of incidents involving a plane crash and a 'red Wire'.

The new F-35 is a vertical takeoff supersonic jet for the Navy and the Marines. I would say there's nothing about this incident the pilot enjoys other than the end result.

If he could have ejected at 100' upside down and lived, he would have.

Looks like the afterburner kicks in while still vectored for vertical
takeoff. DUH!

Lockheed would call this a "software malfunction" and needs to do a little more "regressive testing".

Good demo of power-to-weight ratio of this aircraft! And some unbelievable stability control.

If he didn't come out of the loop wings-level, it probably would have been bad news, maybe taking some of the carrier with him!

Flying through your own exhaust can lead to equipment malfunctions, too, but fortunately he avoided that.

This is the most unbelievable piece of flying you will ever see in your
life. This is how a supremely well-trained US Navy pilot with ice water running in his veins instead of blood, fully regains control of his $70 million fighter
jet, after a problematic vertical take-off attempt that would have killed you or me.

At the top of the screen watch as the rear vertical thruster fires to cause the problem.

Spitfire Restored

Spitfire - restored and operational:

Ardmore Airport, just south of Auckland, New Zealand. These test flight pictures were taken Sept 29, 2009 .....After all its test flying was completed, this plane was scheduled to be disassembled and shipped by container to Texas, USA.

The history of this particular plane (BL628) is a little 'cloudy' (beginning in 1943), but Spitfire History says it went to RNAS in Belfast, Ireland and then was sent out to Victoria, Australia! Who looks superb!

Aerial Combat Encounter

This came from a gent who runs a 2000 acre corn farm up around Barron , WI , not far from Oshkosh . He used to fly F-4Es and F-16s for the Guard and participated in the first Gulf War. Submitted for your enjoyment, and as a reminder that there are other great, magnificent flyers around besides humans.

I went out to plant corn for a bit to finish a field before tomorrow morning and witnessed The Great Battle ... A golden eagle - big bastard, with about a six foot wingspan - flew right in front of the tractor. It was being chased by three crows that were continually dive bombing it and pecking at it. The crows do this because the eagles rob their nests when they find them.

At any rate, the eagle banked hard right in one evasive maneuver, then landed in the field about 100 feet from the tractor. This eagle stood about
3 feet tall. The crows all landed too, and took up positions around the eagle at 120 degrees apart, but kept their distance at about 20 feet from the big bird. The eagle would take a couple steps towards one of the crows and they'd hop backwards and forward to keep their distance. Then the reinforcement showed up.

I happened to spot the eagle's mate hurtling down out of the sky at what appeared to be approximately Mach 1.5. Just before impact the eagle on the ground took flight, (obviously a coordinated tactic; probably pre-briefed) and the three crows which were watching the grounded eagle, also took flight thinking they were going to get in some more pecking on the big bird. The first crow being targeted by the diving eagle never stood a snowball's chance in hell. There was a mid-air explosion of black feathers and that crow was done. The diving eagle then banked hard left in what had to be a 9G climbing turn, using the energy it had accumulated in the dive, and hit crow #2 less than two seconds later. Another crow dead.
The grounded eagle, which was now airborne and had an altitude advantage on the remaining crow, which was streaking eastward in full burner, made a short dive then banked hard right when the escaping crow tried to evade the hit. It didn't work - crow #3 bit the dust at about 20 feet AGL.
This aerial battle was better than any air show I've been to, including the warbirds show at Oshkosh .. The two eagles ripped the crows apart and ate them on the ground, and as I got closer and closer working my way across the field, I passed within 20 feet of one of them as it ate its catch. It stopped and looked at me as I went by and you could see in the look of that bird that it knew who's Boss Of The Sky. I gave him the "Thumbs UP"!
I loved it. Not only did they kill their enemy, they ate them.
One of the best Fighter Pilot stories I've seen in a long time...

It is a "Christmas card video" from this Chinese couple but as the video plays, he will explain the full story of the night engine out landing in the U-2.
